Description

We camped at the Maryland State Park on Assateague Island along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean the nights of September 20-21, 2019. The skies are gloriously dark despite the glow of Ocean City, Maryland to the north and the local campsites. The Milky Way was prominent in the sky both nights, at least until the moon rose over the ocean around midnight. This image was taken from the campground side of the dunes looking towards the southwest where the Milky Way core region was just visible above the horizon. The light pollution from the nearby campsite made a mess of the horizon in the images (a bright camper is hidden just behind the dune in these pictures).

Imaged using a Nikon D5300 (full spectrum modified), IDAS HEUIB-II (H-α Enhanced UV IR Blocking) filter, and 14 mm Rokinon lens at F2.8. Exposures were 20 seconds at ISO-6400.

Combined 10 subs using Sequator (freeze ground, auto brightness=ON, HDR=ON, LP reduction = ON, intelligent LP=OFF). Light post-processing using PixInsight (histogram transformation, curves transformation, color saturation adjustment).
